Sub Dub - Sub Dub Ep's / Original Masters 1993 - 1995

Sub Dub -  Sub Dub Ep's / Original Masters 1993 - 1995 (theAgriculture, AG005, 2001) (FLAC)

This is a biggie.  When I previewed this at a Seattle record store that specialized in dub, there is a handwritten sticker on the back of the case that says "DEEP DUB" which is saying something coming from this place.  I listened to half the first track and immediately decided to buy it.  This is heavy heavy heavy dub.  It gets a bit dark in there, but worth the trip by far!

Review:
For fans of the experimental reggae-dub-Middle Eastern duo Sub Dub (Raz Mesinai and John Ward), the privately released EPs Babylon Unite and Dawa Zangpo were like minor Holy Grails, always to be sought and rarely to be found; Sub Tools was nothing but a cruel hoax, an EP that was rumored to have been recorded but had never been commercially released. Blessings be upon the heads of those at the Agriculture label who, in 2001, worked with Mesinai and Ward to produce this continuous-mix compilation of all three EPs, making these dark, funky, and exotic tracks available again to Sub Dub's small but adamant cult following. At this point in Sub Dub's career, the duo's sound consisted mainly of variations on a dark trip-hop and dub theme: "Monuments on Earth" leans to the reggae side with its slow, elephantine groove and one-drop rhythmic structure; "Dawa Zamgpo" is more of a rolling hip-hop affair, with jazzy acoustic bass, occasional turntable flourishes, and an ethnic vocal sample taken straight off an old African Head Charge album. "Babylon Unite" is a two-part instrumental steppers anthem that may or may not reference ancient Persia but definitely gets abstract and not especially fun in the second half. Overall, this is a fascinating and occasionally slightly disturbing excursion into the dark underbelly of dub, and is recommended without reservation to all fans of experimental dub and electronica.
videos are strangely hard to find for this album.  i can post a 320mp3 if you'd rather not make the flac commitment.

Various - But Then Again

Various - But Then Again (~scape, sc 023 cd, 2004) (320)

Scape is quite possibly my third favorite label (after Kranky & Touch).  And this compilation has a ton of exclusive tracks by all the classic peeps.  I'm a bit surprised that there is no Pole track here, but I'm sure he mastered some of these.  It's a pretty great comp.

01 Cappablack – 5th Dimension (Anti-imperialism Disco)
02 Thomas Fehlmann – Take 5
03 Mike Shannon – Remembrance (Feat. June)
04 John Tejada – And Many More
05 Deadbeat – We Like It Slow And Steady
06 Bus & Dabrye – What Is Paris?
07 Triola – Neuland
08 Jan Jelinek – Western Mimikry
09 EPO – Doorstep
10 Andrew Pekler – Unidentified
11 Triosk – Tomorrowtoday (Part 2)
12 Headset & Soulo – The Fall Of Knee High
13 Rechenzentrum vs. Masha Qrella – Destination Vertical
14 System – Hu Ra !!
15 Crackhaus – Birthday Bangers And Mash

Review from boomkat:
Right about time for a new collection of unreleased business on Scape. Most of the usual and familiar protagonists are here: Thomas Fehlmann proving yet again why he's one of the world's most consistent producers, John Tejada likewise - slightly preparing you for their entirely dope Plug Research albums - both due in the next month. There's the ever present Jan Jelinek, the System super-group, the excellent Triosk, Andrew Peckler, another great take on hip-hop from the criminally under-utilised Cappablack, dub delights Deadbeat, a new Bus and Dabrye collaboration, alongside newer recruits to Betke's empire. Mike Shannon, Jorg Burger's Triola [watch this space for the new Kompakt album next week, which is a peach also], the lovely folk stylings of Epo, cut-up house from Crackhaus, Headset and Soulo guesting from the Plug Research camp and a fascinating collaboration between Rechenzentrum and Masha Qrella. All the obsessions with bassy dub, jazz and hip-hop remain, but there seems to be a new spirit of openness in the scape camp - and here's a nice window on these new sounds.

Various - Four A.D.

Various - Four A.D. (Waveform Records, 2003) (320)

Various - One A.D.

Various - One A.D. (Volume One Ambient Dub) (Waveform Records, 1994) (320)

This is probably one of the first albums that got me into more electronic sounds, and especially ambient. The label Waveform was a pretty big deal to me in 1994 to about 2000. They had a good run. There is some tie between them and Beyond Records, as their comps have similar tracks and style. I'll post those in due time. I sort of lost track of Waveform as some of their stuff had more of a downtempo vibe, which I wasn't into as much.

There was a reissue of this comp that came out in 2000 with a slightly different tracklisting. I'd like to hear that if anyone has it.

I also have this on blue vinyl. Pretty cool.

01 Templeroy - Dubometer
02 Pentatonik - Devotion
03 G.O.L - Soma Holiday
04 Banco de Gaia - Desert Wind (Interstate 101 Mix)
05 Higher Intelligence Agency - Spectral
06 A Positive Life - The Calling
07 Sandoz - Beam
08 Higher Intelligence Agency - Harmony Angel
09 Banco de Gaia - Shanti (Black Mountain Mix)
10 Original Rockers - Mecca Of Space
11 A Positive Life - The Calling (Ambient Mix)
